Unicorn Type 3 bags are the global benchmark for producing grain spawn in large quantities or for medium-sized fruiting blocks. Their format is specifically sized to offer an excellent volume-to-space ratio in autoclaves and on incubation shelves.

Technical Characteristics:

• Exact Dimensions: 48 x 20 x 12.5 cm, perfect for grain spawn or substrate blocks from 1.5 kg to 2.5 kg.
• Heavy Duty Thickness: 3 mil (80 microns) plastic. This superior thickness guarantees excellent mechanical resistance, preventing punctures during substrate compacting and tearing during post-autoclave handling.
• Material: Medical-grade polypropylene, designed to withstand prolonged autoclave cycles (121°C) without failing.
• Side Gussets: Allow the bag to stand upright on its own during filling and maximize useful volume.

Which filter to choose for your cultures?

• Filter Type T (0.2 micron – Maximum Safety): Provides the strictest anti-contaminant barrier. Essential for grain spawn, long incubations, or challenging environments. Gas exchange is slower, but contamination risk is minimal. Recommended for securing grain spawn.
• Filter Type A (0.5 micron – High Respiration): The ideal compromise for fruiting substrates (sawdust, straw). It allows fast colonization thanks to an excellent oxygen supply, while maintaining very decent protection against molds. Ideal for proper mycelium respiration on substrate.
• Filter Type B (5.0 microns – Maximum Flow): Specifically designed for ultra-fast incubations and aggressive growth species (like oyster mushrooms). Gas exchange is maximized, boosting mycelium metabolism. Caution: 5.0 µm porosity requires inoculation and incubation in a laboratory or very clean premises to avoid contaminants.

Lab Tips: Leave sufficient air space under the filter (headspace). This guarantees good oxygenation at the core of the block and greatly facilitates shaking and breaking the grain (shake and break) a few days after inoculation to distribute the mycelium evenly.
